Day 1 Of The Thirty Day Challenge

There are many areas where I'd like to change, things I want to do or not do.  I'm starting small with this 30 day challenge thing.  As Matt Cutts says, the small, sustainable changes are more likely to stick.  My first challenge is that I will start my day 30 minutes earlier. Stop laughing.  If you know me, you know I am a morning zombie. I don't do mornings. I get up and stare at a coffee cup for a long, long time (gulping in between the stares).  I play games on the computer. I watch the news. I clean the kitchen counter. Then I play another game or two or three.  I screech into work between 9 and 9:30 because I have a 45 minute commute and I can't get moving until 8:30 or so. Then I have to work later and I'm not one of those people who abruptly shuts down when my 8 hours are up. Another 45 minutes to 1 hour home and by the time I get dinner on the table and eat, I'm not good for much. I want to start my day a half hour earlier. Who knows, maybe I'll

30 Day Challenge by Matt Cutts

I I am going to embark on a 30 Day Challenge.  It will start on Sept. 30 and end on Oct. 29.  If I like the way it goes, I'll pick something else for November. I'd love it if you gave me your suggestions. I might try the novel writing in Nov. just because it sounds like a fun thing for an English Major nerd to do.

Porch Ponderings - We will, we will rock you

There's just something about a rocking chair on a porch.  It feels good. It feels right. It conjures up images of days gone by. It brings back happy memories.  It is relaxing and soothing. I belong to an online group called The Christian Hotel and we've had many a virtual visit on the front porch. These ladies have become treasured friends over the years. Now when I see a rocker on a porch, I'm reminded of my friend Monica and her big Bible that she talked about, the one she found under a porch when she was a little girl.  And I think about all the nights and days, we've all been in our virtual rockers, describing our rooms, telling our stories, having parties by the lake, walks on the path, trail rides, and times in the chapel and the garden. Virtual or physical, there's nothing like a rocking chair. Below are some photographs of rockers that I've taken over the years. Porch Ponderings - Sunday

Just thinking about a memory from years gone by.  I was about eighteen or nineteen, still living at home and going to school. It was evening and my mom and I were sitting on the front porch.  I informed her that I had plans to buy a motorcycle.  Keep in mind that this was in the seventies.  We were "good" people, a "church family" and in my mother's mind girls did not drive motorcycles.  And in those days they were fewer and further between.  Anyway, my mother looks at me and says "Oh okay. You can park it back there in the alley", gesturing to the back of the house.  I was amazed at her calm reaction and was starting to think about how the back alley might be a good place to park a bike. Before I could respond, however, she spoke her next sentence: "Because that's where I'll throw all your stuff when I kick you out of the house."   Message clear.  No motorcycles for me while I was under her roof.  Oh, I know she loved me and it was h

Porch Sitting

Greetings from our porch. I've been inspired by one of my favorite Facebook pages,  The Porch Potatoes , to enjoy our porch, sit on our porch, and share photos of porches I've enjoyed over the last few years.  I'm a porch sitter from way back.  My mother used to love to porch sit.  I can remember sitting out on the porch after supper and talking away. As my mom got older, those times became more precious.  Now when I'm with my sister we enjoy a good porch sit.  But I have little or no porch pictures from back in the day.  That was when film was a precious commodity and unless you were a professional photographer you saved that roll of 12 or 24 for special moments.  Little did I realize how precious those moments on the porch were. I'm going to do a series of posts on porch sitting memories. Today I'm sharing one from last year.  It was a beautiful fall day.  My husband and I were out on the porch with nothing but an iPad and Pandora radio.  A lively tune ca
