Sixty Second Haiku

The challenge I have given myself is to find a random topic using this random topic generator and write a haiku verse in 60 seconds.  This is the best I can do under pressure.  Try your hand at it.  It's fun. 1)  The best places to fish in NY: Fishkill will not work the best of new york fishing Salmon run for sure 2) Eating late at night: Late night snacks bring dreams The landscapes of pleasant thoughts and maybe a belch 3) Your ever changing goal in life Life's four seasons Bring a change in my forecast I stop, shift, move, sigh 4) Deserted train stations: Nothing but bare rails A place where once hummed mankind Silent, eerie, stark

Leave the Happy Meals Alone

When I was a kid we didn't have Happy Meals .  We had sugary cereal with toys in it and Cracker Jacks with prizes.  I loved that stuff.  My parents didn't overdo it.  Maybe our family finances were partly responsible for that but I also think even if they had a lot of disposable income, they would know enough to not ruin my health.  As I heard quoted on the news earlier something like "Happy Meals Don't Give Kids Bad Food.  Parents do." I know we have a child obesity crisis but I have a hard time believing a toy in a meal is responsible for it.  Lighten up, people, it's a treat, not a daily staple.  The food police are using excessive force here.  Dumb dumb dumb.   Check out the Food Police website where the press release can be found.  The allegations they make sound ridiculous to me.  Here's an example:   " “McDonald’s is the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children,” said CSPI litigation director Stephen Gardner. “McDonald’s use of

Join The Adventure

Review of " Lafayette's Gold: The Lost Brandywine Treasure " by Gene Pisasale They say you should write what you know about and it's very obvious that Gene Pisasale knows a lot about American history, but also about the Brandywine valley, relationships, the good life, and going for the gold. There is also intrigue and suspense. At times this novel is like Jeff Shaara meets James Patterson with maybe even a little Erich Segal thrown in.It's a fun read and one that will have you turning the pages to find out what will become of Jim and Natalie. You'll even learn a few things about Lafayette and the Brandywine Battle but I promise it won't feel like a history class. View all my reviews >>

Get Your Scrant On

We had a nice trip to Scranton Pennsylvania this weekend to visit my sister and to celebrate her birthday, Lloyd's birthday, and our anniversary. We went to dinner at Tratoria Bella on Friday night.  Then on Saturday we enjoyed a trolley ride  (caught at Steamtown National Historic site ) to the historic iron furnaces and the Arts on Fire industrial arts expo hosted by Keystone College and local nonprofits such as the Anthracite Heritage Museum. Before we left, I gave Lloyd a gift.  I had bought him a new iPod.  I snuck into his car when he was busy watching the Orioles lose (what else is new?) and recorded several of his favorite CD's plus I added a bunch of songs he likes and some messages from the Greater Grace archives.  Below is a clip of him groovin' to his favorite tune "Diamonds In The Ebony Sky" by Janine Turner and her daughter Juliette.  Click on the arrow to play (includes sound).
