Choosing The Better Things - Women's Bible Study 9/21/17

As we studied the "whatsoever things" of Philippians 4, we covered things that we choose to think on.  As we make volitional choices in our lives, there are often "better things" that we find in God's Word. Here are some of them.

Our Better Choices

Luke 10:41-42New International Version (NIV)

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a]Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”   Our Priorities

1 Samuel 15:22King James Version (KJV)

22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. Our responses

Psalm 84:10

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.  Our occupation

Proverbs 21:9

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.  Our behavior

Proverbs 17:1

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than a house full of sacrifices with strife. Our choices

Psalm 118:8King James Version (KJV)

8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Our relationships

Proverbs 8:11King James Version (KJV)

11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it  Our values

Proverbs 15:16-17New International Version (NIV)

16 Better a little with the fear of the Lord
than great wealth with turmoil. Our investments

17 Better a small serving of vegetables with love
than a fattened calf with hatred. Our approach

Proverbs 16:32

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Our controls

Choosing God’s Better Provisions

Psalm 63:3

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee  God’s mercy

Psalm 37:16-17New International Version (NIV)

16 Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the Lord upholds the righteous.  God’s gift of righteousness

Hebrews 7:18-19

18 So the former commandment is set aside because it was weak and useless 19(for the Law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. God’s gift of salvation through the blood of Jesus

Ecclesiastes 7:1King James Version (KJV)

7 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.  God’s future for us

Nothing OT

I belong to some online groups that are designed to share special interests like reading, cooking, travel, etc. Often replies to a post will get off on a tangent and before you know it, the subject is changed to begin with "OT" for "off topic". In some groups members or moderators will try to abolish off topic posts in order to keep down volume and to keep the posts related to the subject of the mail group. But it's comforting to know that nothing is OT with God. We can go to Him in prayer and pour out our hearts. We can approach Him about anything and everything in our lives and He listens. We don't have to have a religious formula for prayer. If we read something from a prayer book that's okay too if it expresses our hearts. But if the prayer is "HELP" or "God, I can't go on" or even if we lash out in fear or anger, it's okay. It doesn't change the way He feels about us. He loves us unconditionally. He is looking for us ...
