Snow Story

It's been a little over a week since our famous back-to-back snowstorms started. Last Saturday, Lloyd and I got a call from his son in the morning. It seems that his niece (my stepdaughter's son's wife) was on her way from North Carolina to New Jersey. She was to meet her mom for a weekend together. Her mom was travelling from Maine to New Jersey. But then around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Lizzie found herself stranded in Baltimore. Stuck in between a few tractor trailers with her little Mustang, there was nothing to do but strand the car.
In a short time we received phone calls from Lizzie's mother-in-law (my stepdaughter) and husband as well. We only live about 10 or 12 miles from there, but it may as well have been the other side of the country. We had about two feet of snow by then. I couldn't move my little hybrid and Lloyd's 4 wheel drive was behind it. Plus with Lloyd's heart condition, he cannot shovel much and I certainly wasn't any match for that amount of heavy snow.
Lizzie was stuck on the road and the city and state were not helping. The city said she was on a state road. The state said she was on a city road. She was stuck in the a bureaucratic nightmare until almost noon. Her husband Rick (whom I proudly call my grandson) is a soldier in Ft. Bragg. He decided to try his military brothers and sisters. It was only a matter of time before the National Guard picked her up in a Hummer and dove her to our house.
Now we were not looking forward to the snow. But God brought this little angel to our house. What a delightful young lady she is. It was so wonderful to have a sweet guest with us as we wiled away the snowy hours.
On Sunday, her awesome mom, Doreen, drove down and helped get Lizzie's car dug out. Doreen's a seasoned Maine driver with a 4 wheel. However, even she couldn't make it down our street. She managed to park off the main road and walk over. Mother and daughter got to spend time together after all. And we got to make some new friends who are part of our extended family.
We can't leave out Happy, the wonder pup, who was also a part of the package. (Although our cat would happily forget, I' sure).

Social Media Fast Day 1/2 I have been considering a social media fast.  Unbeknownst to me, someone I know was on a week long fast. She reported about how beneficial it was and I took that as a confirmation that this was the time for me. September 1 sneaked up on me and I had some commitments for posting some prayer requests, but once that was done, I uninstalled Facebook (my primary Social Media) form my phone. I can pretty well ignore Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like but Facebook is my constant itch that I have to keep scratching. I came to the realization that I primarily use Facebook to feed my desire for approbation.  Don't we all want to be admired and respected?  Don't we often want to be right, to have a forum where others are agreeing with our brilliance?  LOL I'm guilty. I also realize the other downside of social media for me and that's all the political vitriol.  As much as I don't get sucked into it, as much as I scroll past...

Just a few more memories

There were a few photos that I didn't post on the entry about our trip to Boca Raton.  I'm sure I have a bunch more in various places. I figure we gained 7 pounds, 700 friends, 7,000 memories and 7,000,000 photographs. Video from Awards Night

Ornament of the Day - December 1

After a year long hiatus from blogging, I'm back to muse about the ornaments hanging on our tree.  Each day I will select an ornament and tell something about where it came from and the memories that it invokes.   December 1 - Currier & Ives This ornament came to me from my parents. They got it as a gift for opening a Christmas Club. These accounts are not so popular now and they sometimes earned a bad rap for having a lot of restrictions and a low or non-existent interest rate, but back in the day they were how we paid for Christmas. Members were often given some sort of token give such as this ornament.   When I look at this ornament it takes me back to my youth and young adulthood. We'd put a few dollars into our Christmas Club each week and just after Thanksgiving we'd get our cash.  Shopping meant going "downtown".  For us, that meant downtown Scranton.   Sometimes we'd take the bus. I remember as a child how exciting it was to be downtown g...
